On December 8, 1875, The City of Sweetwater officially became incorporated as a town in Monroe County, Tennessee.
The
City will celebrate its 150th birthday on December 8,
2025. We are planning
festivities throughout 2025 to commemorate Sweetwater’s past, celebrate our present, and cast a
vision for our future.
Our city has experienced groundbreaking achievements, powered through loss and hard times, and kept the good of the citizens of Sweetwater as our motivation for moving forward, creating a culture of community in this beautiful valley.

Sweetwater's Population in 1880: 677
Sweetwater's Population in 2020: 6,312
Monroe County's Population grew from 14,283 in 1880 to 46,250 in 2020.
Industry
Until about 1940 Tennessee’s economy was predominantly agricultural, textile, and iron-manufacturing. Sweetwater had a hosiery textile mill. Although, industry did not grow significantly until the 1930s and ’40s.
Today the largest industries in Sweetwater, are Manufacturing, Tourism, and Retail Trade.
